This project required us to enable Guidelines Trust Indexers (librarians) to add Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) terms and CUIs to an existing Guidelines Brief from within the Guidelines Trust web application.

Users given access could navigate to the Guideline Indexing site through their username drop down menu.

Research told us that the top methods to search for Briefs are by Guideline ID or Guideline Title, and that librarians know which brief they are searching for.

After authorized users arrive on the Guideline Indexing landing page, they can begin to search by ID or title, and the search would populate with the matching Guideline Title.

From the search results page, the indexer is then able to select the Guideline to add terms, see the recent activity, and change the status depending on their permissions.

You can also expand the view to show all existing terms that have been tagged. This is useful for Guideline reviewers who are not indexing the Briefs themselves, but are approving the terms indexed by a Guideline indexer.

From the Search Terms page, an indexer can enter a term or a CUI to populate additional results. In this example, we can see ‘Platelet Transfusion’ has four associated terms in the search results. An indexer can select the CUI button to view corresponding atoms, or select the checkbox alongside the term to add it to the other list of terms.

Now when Guidelines Trust users search the site by term, ‘Platelet Transfusion’ now populates the search results with Briefs that have been tagged with that term.
These are the wireframes we based the UI on. Since this is an internal tool primarily for ECRI librarians and the indexers, not much additional effort was put into refining the UI.
